As a new century begins the social norms always tend to progress, but on a specific topic, the standards of women in science fields. Through the years women have gained power in the science fields but it wasn’t always like that. It’s interesting that women in the past couldn’t go into these fields and now the option is open for all. I wanted to know what it’s like to be a female scientist in the 21st century and if there’s any benefits or obstacles to their job. From gaining a better understanding of the intensity women in these fields had to go through in the 60s and 70s seem like they should be getting much better through the years but that is not always the case. Eileen Pollack, a writer from the New York Times, writes “I was dismayed to find that the cultural and psychological factors that I experienced in the 70s not only persist but also seem all the more pernicious in a society in which women are told that nothing is preventing them from succeeding in any field.” This gives a new perspective of a woman who is in the real workforce. Pollack thought the differences would’ve been better as social change continues but she was unpleasantly surprised. I think the stereotype that girls don’t do science is false and irrational. As an overall society, I think it’s important to teach young girls not only to do whatever profession they want but also how to confront issues as they occur for finding better solutions to these issues.
