A new bill in California is undergoing trial on the debate if college athletes should get paid or not. I’m conflicted in this debate because there are two clear sides and I understand why they would want this bill to pass but also I find it unreasonable. The side that says yes for the bill gives reason that at the end of the day the kids are still college students and need money to get by for themselves but with sports always in the way it can be hard to find a job that is very flexible. On the other hand, these students are just like any other that go to the school and shouldn’t be given special treatment because sports fans glorify these athletes. When you put it into perspective, you would never find an engineering or business student getting paid to run or be part of a club or school activity. I understand that college athletes have big fan bases already, me following many college athletes myself, but I feel like they got their big chunk of money when they received the scholarship to go to the school. This presents another question of how would you pay them? The first thing that pops into my mind is making tuition costs higher to ensure college athletes get paid. I think this creates a huge issue, since college tuition is already so much and the amount of student debt from college loans is so high this would add on more fees to increase the problem. In all I feel it is still important to consider both sides because this argument is very relevant to today’s society.
