This morning I listened to the podcast Gen Z Tea with the topic of social media’s effect on mental health. I think this topic is very important for people in this generation because it’s very easy to scroll through social media and ask the question why don’t I look like that? In the podcast two girls around the high school age deleted social media from their phones for a week to see what it would feel like and the results seemed rewarding. They found new and enjoyable activities but most importantly their stress levels seemed to go down. I believe this is because social media mostly relates to what you want your best self to look like or what you want to portray to others. On the other hand, the girls also found that deleting social media couldn’t be sustained for them saying that there are people that contacted them over social media rather than just texting or calling. This makes a good point that society has evolved and social media is a part of that. Overall I believe that getting off social media and the “infinite scroll” is important for your mental health as well as filling up that time with a new activity.
